Crazy Power is the culmination of Josh Reichmann’s absorbed and mutated influences and ideas to date. Recorded throughout 2008 at Giant Studios in Toronto, it is a kaleidoscopic testament to studio spontaneity and song craft.
Recorded with Ian McGettigan and produced by Josh, the album showcases friends and a community of musicians backing up Reichmann’s voice and song, with much of the instrumentation by Reichmann himself. Crazy Power is sprawling, ambitious and cohesive yet tied together by sonic themes ranging from nevau synth and distorted hooks to early funk/soul production and feel. The album references everything from Lennon to Robert Wyatt, Funkadelic, to E-street Band and Dylan with the warble and strange-sex of T-Rex and outsider glam. It is truly a cauldron of ideas topped with something unique and unmistakably current in its tone. Lyrically Josh speaks of the cycle of love, mysterious spiritual musings through a cryptic/shamonic essence of word play seemingly out of this world but grounded in our time. It is a celebratory record of hope, ambition and warning with a bizarre humour and intensity.
Like a band from another world aping the sounds of the 20th century with manic intensity and passion. Josh is joined in the studio by Ian McGettigan on bass, James Sayce (of Tangiers) on bass, Sebastien Grainger on drums, Steve Singh on keyboards, and Joseph Shabason on sax.
Live the band can be an entirely different animal. Fleshed out by a six peace band – Josh Reichmann Oracle Band is comprised of Steve Singh on keys, Jon Hynes on bass, Joseph Shabason on sax, Vince Spilchuc on trumpet, Kieran Adams on drums, Josh Reichmann on guitar, and Laura Bolton often accompanies with dance. It is a warped soul revival rock show with dark echoes and haunting energy.
Josh continues to record most of the year between touring and will release sections of these recordings as singles between records, making for a catalog of depth and showing a versatility not often seen wrapped around a centre of pop song writing sensibility. Crazy Power showcases a unique and powerful artist with seemingly inexhaustible resources.
