Young Galaxy Release New Video, Tour With Austra!

Posted by Dina on September 26, 2011

Young Galaxy are excited to release the sequel to the outstanding video for ‘We Have Everything’ which recently broke YouTube‘s 100,000 views barrier.  The new video for ‘Peripheral Visionaries’ was also directed by Sinbad Richardson, a Montreal based visual artist working as an animator, designer and video director.  Young Galaxy are also excited to announce that they will be supporting label-mates Austra on their upcoming tour of Canada (full list of dates below).

In ‘Peripheral Visionairies’, Jennifer finds herself given a second chance to live a fulfilling life. A producer discovers her one night singing in a karaoke bar and gives her the glamorous life she had previously only dreamed of. In the end, she makes the same mistakes as in her previous less than privileged life, having learned nothing at all despite her creator’s efforts. Will she ever learn?

“The band asked me to create a second animated music video and I suggested making a sequel to ‘We Have Everything’ off the same album,” says Sinbad Richardson. “‘Peripheral Visionaries’ picks up where we left off, our main character is stranded on the side of the highway, her bus having broken down. This narrative interprets ‘Peripheral Visionaries’ as a confession to the attraction of the unholy and a belonging to an ambiguous (nonetheless determined) rebellion against virtue. Our main character was to give in to her superficial ambitions but not without a cost. The line ‘We a sea, tears from the eyes of god’ repeated over and over, is taken as a foregone conclusion.”

New Cuff The Duke MP3 + Tour Dates + Videos!

Posted by Dina on September 6, 2011

Cuff The Duke have made another track from their Paper Bag Records debut Morning Comes available for download.  Album stand-out ‘Standing On The Edge’ can be downloaded here.  The band is also excited to announce that they have extended their Canadian tour to include dates in Ottawa, Hamilton and two-night stands at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern and Kingston’s Grad Club (full list of dates below).

Also keep your eye on CBC Radio 2′s blog for the exclusive premiere of Cuff The Duke’s Paper Bag Sessions which will be rolling out one by one each Tuesday leading up to the October 4th release of the album.  Watch for the first video for ‘Count On Me’ here.  Check back for another video for ‘Time Is Right’ which will be premiered today at noon EST.

After almost ten years as a band and four albums to its credit, Cuff the Duke has made … a concept record. The Toronto roots rockers wouldn’t call it that (there are no suites about dragons here), but there it is, 10 tracks on a theme that flow like a film, like a good book, one filled with emotional highs and lows, plot twists, and universal truths. Morning Comes is a story about change, about confronting loss, about – as one track calls it — ‘Standing on the Edge’ and having the courage to look across to an unknown future on the other side.

And if the record leaves you on a slight down-beat with the reflective closing track ‘Letting Go’, there is also much brightness on the horizon, as the band is already recording a companion sequel [title TBA] to explore life after loss.

“Where ‘Letting Go’ leaves off, with a person who has moved on, the next record is what comes after that.” says the band’s Wayne Petti. “It should be lyrically more upbeat, still questioning things, but more optimistic rather than sad and final. I always try to incorporate a sense of hope.”

Rolling Stone Premieres PS I Love You Video!

Posted by Dina on August 16, 2011

Rolling Stone has premiered the video for “Leftovers”, the much talked about collaboration between PS I Love You and good friend Diamond Rings. The clip was directed by Colin Medley, who’s worked with both artists in the past — PS I Love You “Facelove”, Diamond Rings “All Yr Songs” and “Something Else”. “Leftovers” will be available on PS I Love You’s forthcoming rarities compilation, Figure It Out, due out August 30 on vinyl and as a digital download.

Rolling Stone says of the clip, “The band gives a glimpse at life on their joint tour with Diamond Rings this past spring. Like director Colin Medley’s previous collaboration with the band, this take is candid and fun. Cut with performance footage and the making of an over-the-top meal, the video skips the showy stuff and chronicles what singer/guitarist Paul Saulnier says the band does best: “take days off and have dinner parties.”

Medley elaborates a bit further, “I was on the road with the bands mostly for fun but also to document the tour any way I knew how. Most nights, PS I Love You would end their set by inviting Diamond Rings to the stage to play their single “Leftovers.” With no clear plan in mind, I started to tape their performances of the single. Halfway through the tour when we found ourselves with a day off, we decided it might be fun to develop a music video for the song while still on the road. Driving from Austin, TX to Tuscon, AZ, we stopped over in a small town called Marfa, TX (pop. 2000) and rented a trailer for the night. Using the song’s title as a cue, Paul (of PS I Love You) cooked up an amazing meal for all of us in the small confines of our mobile home, and of course, there were plenty of leftovers.”

PS I Love You hits the road on September 3rd in Seattle, WA at the Bumbershoot Festival and wraps up on October 29th in Kingston, ON at Grad Club with support from the likes of Suuns and Balkans (select dates). View full tour dates below.

Cuff The Duke Release New Single, Announce Tour

Posted by Dina on August 9, 2011

Cuff The Duke has just released their first single from Morning Comes, their forthcoming album.

‘Count On Me’ is now available to download on the band’s Facebook page.

Cuff The Duke will release their fifth album Morning Comes on October 4th. The ten-track album was produced by Blue Rodeo’s Greg Keelor and is the first part of a two part album. Morning Comes includes single ‘Count On Me’ (MP3) and an eight minute epic called ‘Bound To Your Own Vices’. Cuff The Duke are also excited to announce a tour of Western Canada. The alt-country road-warriors will hit the road on October 20th in Thunder Bay (full list of dates below). More Canadian dates will be announced soon.

“These albums are about dealing with loss of someone and the change that brings to one’s life,” says the band’s Wayne Petti. “The confusion and loneliness that occurs at that point in someone’s life. Coming to grips with the reality of those things. By the end of this record we start to make peace with this and come to terms with it. All these songs are about that. They deal with a similar theme and emotion but still wondering in the back of our minds whether there will be a point to all of it. That’s what the second record will be about. Embracing what has happened and navigating down new roads. This album is the low and the next album will be the high.”

Young Galaxy Announce World Tour + New Video

Posted by Dina on July 26, 2011

Montreal art-rock outfit Young Galaxy will kick off an exciting second run of tour dates across the globe this September in celebration of their highly successful album Shapeshifting which was released last year on Paper Bag Records. The band will be joining electro-pop masterminds Junior Boys for select North American appearances (full list of dates below).

Young Galaxy’s Shapeshifting was recently included on the Polaris Music Prize long list becoming the only act in the prize’s history to be included on the list in consecutive years.  Upon the release of Shapeshifting, Young Galaxy was named CBC Radio 3, Aux TV and Exclaim Magazine‘s X3 Artist of the Month for February. Look for Young Galaxy’s remix of  ‘Lose It’ on Austra‘s Sparkle remix album which is released today and available here.

Young Galaxy is also pleased to release their second video from Shapeshifting. Early this year, Sinbad Richardson‘s animated video for ‘We Have Everything’ topped the Elbo.ws video chart (view below). The stunning new video for ‘Blown Minded’ was crafted by Montreal artist Carine Khalifé, and was inspired by the textures and depths rooted within the song. With paint as her medium, Carine spent four months creating a series of paintings captured frame by frame with a fixed camera. The process took place inside a darkroom, with a single light source coming from beneath the glass to reveal various textures and brush movements. “I worked a lot with transparency. The more paint, the darker the image, and therefore the animation became about gesture, and the texture of brushstrokes. It’s a very physical, organic process. Everything is based on the rhythm” – she explains.

“It was important for me, especially for the abstract parts, that I was responding to the song conversationally like a running dialogue. I think I listened to the song more than a thousand times and because I would often listen and focus solely on drums, voice, lyrics, or melody I was able to hear new things each time. I’m a night worker, and spent several hours at the window, looking at Montreal skies and lights. The chimney is obviously [from] the house next door, and the room at the beginning is my studio. When I arrived in Montreal I liked and was struck by the contrasting warm indoors and deep blue outside. It was a bit like deconstructing the whole song second by second. Spending the last months in the darkroom, with the light box, projecting blue, red or yellow lights on the white walls of my studio was an intense experience.  And now that it’s done, it’s a bit like waking up from a dream, and as the film is now getting out of my studio, I rediscover it with new eyes, almost as if I didn’t do it myself.”

Slim Twig Returns with New Music, Videos and Shows

Posted by Dina on July 25, 2011

Toronto’s shape-shifting performer and visionary song-sculptor Slim Twig has released a string of new videos in support of his recent musical efforts for  Fat Cat imprint, Palmist Records, who will release a U.S. Girls/Slim Twig 12″ in North America on August 16th.  Watch Slim Twig’s self-directed video for ‘Priscilla’ here.  Southern Souls recently recorded an intimate live performance of ‘I’ll Always Be A Child’ which can be viewed here.  Both tracks will be available on the new 12″.

To showcase the new tunes and provide a glimpse of what we might expect on his next album currently being completed, Slim Twig will unveil his new band next month starting with a show Toronto’s Dakota Tavern on August 18th (full list of dates below).  Slim Twig’s second full-length album is scheduled for release in early 2012 on Paper Bag Records. While his work thus far has been dominated by a collage-based style of production — crate-digging and snatching moments of pre-recorded music for re-interpretation – Slim’s new project will emphasize live production with diverse instrumentation and an exciting list of collaborators on board.

Slim Twig’s artistic vision is born from a twisted landscape of pop and experimental music and avant-garde film. Besides his great hair, this vision has given many critics a lot to write about since being introduced with his two-part EP series, Derelict Dialect and Vernacular Violence. His debut album Contempt! was a self-made exercise in resourcefulness where Slim experimented with whatever he could get his hands on. It leaned decidedly towards an innovative pop sound that places sampling and found sound firmly at its core. The result, pairing the artist’s “switchblade-sharp lyrics” (NOW Magazine) with a rawer, sample-based aesthetic, was unpredictable and highly original.

Tour Dates:
Aug 18 - Toronto, ON -  The Dakota Tavern with U.S. Girls & Sun Ra Ra Ra (Facebook
Aug 19 - London, ON –  Brennan’s Beer Bistro with U.S. Girls & Zacht Automaat
Aug 20 - Peterborough, ON –  The Loft with U.S. Girls & Zacht Automaat

Cuff The Duke to Release ‘Morning Comes’ on Paper Bag

Posted by Dina on June 27, 2011

Paper Bag Records is excited to announce the signing of Cuff The Duke! The alt-country road-warriors are set to release their fifth album Morning Comes on October 4th.   The nine-track album was produced by Blue Rodeo‘s Greg Keelor and is the first part of a two part album.  Morning Comes includes upcoming single ‘Count On Me’ and an eight minute epic called ‘Bound To Your Advice’.  Cuff The Duke will be touring extensively after the album’s release.

Cuff the Duke started out in Oshawa before making the move to Toronto in 2002. Their debut album, Life Stories For Minimum Wage was released on Three Gut Records, at the time one of the most exciting indie-labels in Canada. Their second and third albums, Cuff The Duke and Sidelines And The City respectively, were both released on Hardwood Records alongside label mates Basia Bulat and Hayden.  Their last album, Way Down Here was co-produced by Blue Rodeo’s Greg Keelor at his beautiful barn studio in rural Ontario.
