The Acorn Set Out on Tour, Release Remix Record!

THE ACORN GO ON TOUR, RELEASE REMIX RECORD
After a summer of fun in the sun, The Acorn will be embarking on an extensive fall tour of North America to support  their recently-released album No Ghost. Having recorded the album at a secluded cottage in Northern Québec, the band will be bringing ‘the cottage’ on tour with a thematic stage show, props, and specials guests, to help bring the album to life. You can view all the tour dates at the end of this update!

The Acorn’s long-awaited follow-up to 2007’s wildly-successful Glory Hope Mountain is now receiving remix treatment as well. The band have called on friends and heroes to annihilate and reinvent their music. The remixes range from glitch-pop experiments, to subtle re-inventions and sweet club jams. Make The Least of The Day will only be available physically at The Acorn’s live shows and will be released digitally on September 14th on Paper Bag Digital.

Make The Least Of The Day remixers and tracklisting:
FOUR TET – Restoration
SANDRO PERRI – Misplaced
LAKE – Slippery When Wet
JOKERS OF THE SCENE – Bobcat Goldwraith
OHBIJOU – Almanac
BORN RUFFIANS – Crossed Wires
DIAMOND RINGS – No Ghost
SNAILHHOUSE – Cobbled From Dust
MEGAFAUN – Kindling To Cremation
WOODPIGEON – On The Line
CHAD VANGAALEN – I Made The Law

The limited edition red vinyl version of No Ghost is all sold out in the Paper Bag Online Shop, but is still available on CD and Digital here.

The Rural Alberta Advantage in the Studio, Recording New Album!

The Rural Alberta Advantage will be embarking on a nine-date tour of Canada’s West Coast that will have them spending some extra time in the province that inspired their acclaimed debut album, Hometowns.

The tour comes on the tail-end of a summer of heavy recording for the band, who have been hard at work over the summer with producer Roger Leavens (who also produces Woodhands) at Boombox Sound in Toronto on their as-yet-untitled follow-up album slated for a Canadian release in early 2011 on Paper Bag Records.  Check out some photos of the band from the studio here.

The RAA spent the past winter on the road, hitting a sold out headlining tour across Canada, a performance at the Vancouver Olympics, a relentless schedule of 11 shows over the four days of SXSW in Austin, and recently returned from their first European tour.

The limited blue vinyl edition of Hometowns is sold out in the Paper Bag Records shop – you might be lucky enough to snag a copy from the band themselves on the road, which is a bit of extra incentive to see them on tour!

Hometowns is, however, still available on CD and Digital at the Paper Bag Records Online Shop.

PS I Love You Teams Up With Paper Bag!

We are so excited to announce the addition of Kingston’s PS I Love You to the Paper Bag Records family, and the release of their debut full length due out this fall!

The album, entitled Meet Me At The Muster Station, is 10 tracks long and will probably melt your face off.

PS I Love You was originally the solo project for multi-instrumentalist Paul Saulnier who has performed in everything from a country-rock band to an improvised noise duo.  PS I Love You was intended to be his experimental, pop music outlet using guitar looping pedals, keyboards with some gadgets and gimmicks.  The addition of Benjamin Nelson on drums suddenly transformed PS I Love You’s little songs into mini, soaring rock anthems.

Recently, the band got together with Mitch Fillion of Southern Souls to record an on-the-fly parking garage session. You can view it here.

The duo will be on tour throughout the late summer and fall in support of their upcoming album:

July 31 – Sackville, NB @ Sappyfest
Oct 01 – Edmonton, AB @ Starlite Room w/ Japandroids & Frog Eyes
Oct 02 – Regina, SK @ Distrikt w/ Japandroids & Frog Eyes
Oct 03 – Winnipeg, MB @ Pyramid
Oct 04 – Saskatoon, SK @ Louis’ Pub w/ Japandroids & Frog Eyes
Oct 06 – Calgary, AB @ Republik w/ Japandroids & Frog Eyes
Oct 08 – Victoria, BC @ Logans
Oct 09 – Vancouver, BC @ Rickshaw Theatre w/ Ladyhawk

A Message From You Say Party

To all of our fans and supporters,

Heartfelt thanks for all the messages of love and condolences that you have sent since Devon’s passing. We have drawn a lot of strength from these as we navigate this difficult time. Losing Devon has been a profound loss for the family this band has grown to become. We have taken some time out of the spotlight these last few months to heal, process, reflect and reevaluate the future of this band.

We have talked at great length with each other and our families and friends about the future. Devon’s parents have encouraged us to continue on and given us their blessing. It is their opinion (as well as ours) that Devon would never have wanted his death to end the band. He would have wanted us to continue on.

In the time between Devon’s passing and this statement, we have all reflected upon our personal lives. Krista has decided that her time with us has come to an end as she no longer desires the long drives, poor sleeps and revolting selection of road food. Instead she’s choosing a home, a garden, some gluten-free baking and a proper education. We will miss Krista very much and she remains a part of our lives.

We have turned to our good friends and former tour-mates Robert Andow and Bobby Siadat of Vancouver band “Gang Violence” to play keyboards and drums This new line up will continue the tradition of excellent live shows and sweaty dance floors, with new strength and a renewed commitment to music and touring. The 5 of us look forward to carrying the spirit of our friend Devon with us everywhere.

The cancelled European tour is being rescheduled for this fall and we will announce the dates as soon as possible. We are also planning select shows for the rest of 2010.

Out of respect for Devon and the evolution of life, today we announce that we will no longer be known as “You Say Party! We Say Die!” but instead as simply “You Say Party”.

Lately, we’ve been thinking a lot about the words and meanings we’ve spoken through our music. To return you to the core message of our band, we present the first track “There is XXXX (Within My Heart)” as the next single in North America.

With XXXX and light.

You Say Party and Young Galaxy Longlisted for Polaris Music Prize

Paper Bag Records is proud to announce the inclusion of roster artists You Say Party and Young Galaxy on the 2010 Polaris Music Prize Longlist!

The albums, XXXX and Invisible Republic, are part of the 40 album long longlist revealed today.

They will be voted on for the shortlist announcement by a jury of Canadian music industry professionals, in hopes of moving on to win the grand prize, an annual juried prize awarded to the best Canadian album based on artistic merit.

We’re incredibly happy to see the tireless efforts of these bands gain the recognition they deserve!

Young Galaxy Set To Release Invisible Republic In The States, Tour With Stars

Young Galaxy is pleased to announce the US release of their latest full-length, Invisible Republic.  Previously released in Canada, the anticipation for the record to come stateside has had fans buzzing, but the wait is over. Invisible Republic hits stores July 27, out on Paper Bag Records. The first two singles are “Destroyer” and “Queen Drum.”   The US release will also feature the two exclusive bonus tracks “Invisible Republic” and “Flux.” To celebrate the release, Young Galaxy is making “Queen Drum” available for free download. You can grab it here.

The band’s sophomore release builds upon founding duo Stephen Ramsay’s (guitars, vocals) and Catherine McCandless’ (keyboards, vocals) penchant for transforming the mundane into the fantastic – catchy hooks build into epic crescendos, while political and ethical concerns share space with emotional observations.

“Our mandate for this record was: if it doesn’t make you move, it better make you cry,” quips Ramsay. “Even better is making someone cry and dance at the same time. It makes a lot of people uncomfortable, but I like it!”

Invisible Republic is the product of a long musical and personal journey for Ramsay and McCandless, who first burst onto the Canadian music scene in 2007 with their eponymous debut album, which included stunning first single “Swing Your Heartache.” Extensive touring across North America and Europe that saw Young Galaxy play alongside acts like Death Cab For Cutie, and Metric. Ramsay, former Stars guitarist, has also recently added remixes for The Pipettes and CFCF to his accolades.

Recorded in Montreal, Invisible Republic was engineered by Jace Lasek (of the Besnard Lakes) and mixed by Tony Doogan (Belle & Sebastian, Mogwai, Wintersleep).

The record has been heralded as one of I Heart Music’s “favourite albums of all time,” and “a well-crafted, sweeping pop record” by The Line of Best Fit. Light and dark, connection and loneliness, doubt and optimism - Invisible Republic is the sound of our collective hearts beating in tandem, through both good times and bad. They may be a Young Galaxy yet, but they sing out with an ageless wisdom and tunefulness that bears close listening.

New Releases from Born Ruffians and The Acorn Out Today!

The limited edition red vinyl version of The Acorn’s No Ghost sold through in our online shop before the release date even rolled around – those of you who pre-ordered will be receiving your vinyl (housed in a hand silk-screened sleeve!) in the mail very shortly. Those of you who didn’t pre-order the vinyl but still want it really bad can pick up a copy at your local indie record store, or from the band themselves as they tour across Canada!

You can pick up the album on CD or Digital in our online shop – you can also see where it all began by picking up their past releases – see the catalogue HERE.

To celebrate the release of Say It, the Ruffians played an absolutely packed, sold out CD release party on Friday at The Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto where, overwhelmingly, the crowd was already singing along to new songs. A mighty fine sign, we’d say.
Luke recently played a couple stripped down songs from the new album for AUX TV and Grandcrew in Paris – check the videos out HERE and HERE. If you missed the video for What To Say, you can view it HERE. All four band members were recently on the Breakfast Club with Vish Khanna recently – you can listen to the podcast HERE.
You can pick up the album on CD or Digital in our online shop, or from the band themselves – they will be embarking on a full North American tour this week in support of their new album!
