Paper Bag Records is excited to announce the release of their very first live recording: a collaboration between art-rock indie band Under Byen and the renowned chamber orchestra Danish Radio Sinfonietta on the EP Siamesisk.
The result is a showcase of eight musicians working with a 42-piece classical orchestra to produce a collection that shivers and swells with an icy sensuality, evoking the majestic Nordic glacial terrain and the gothic tales of Hans Christian Andersen.
The DR Sinfonietta is the only professional chamber orchestra in Denmark and performs under the auspices of Danish Radio, Denmark’s national broadcasting corporation. Specializing in recreating the 18th-century world of Mozart and operas, the Sinfonietta is more recently breaking new ground with its experimental ‘genre fusions’ with contemporary artists.
The art-rock band Under Byen (Danish for ‘under the city’) broke the music world open with 2006’s North American release of its album ‘Samme Stof Som Stof.’ They received world-wide critical acclaim for that recording, performed in such unconventional locations as an 18th-century Belgian house, and a Swedish forest. After that success, and two popular North American tours, the band took another risk by coupling with this local talent with a more traditional sound.
In April 2007, the band performed with the DR Sinfonietta in an old concert hall in Copenhagen. The audience of 1500 people enjoyed the exclusive concert consisting of five songs; four from ‘Samme Stof Som Stof’ rearranged by former Under Byen pianist Thorbjørn Krogshede and composer Carsten Fundal into a carefully crafted audio expansion of Under Byen’s distinctive theatricality. Pretty as a music box and grandiose as a full-scale symphony, Siamesisk successfully and intriguingly echoes the ancient ebb and flow of the sea against the Danish coast.
